Greenlight Pictures is one of the most internationally acclaimed film companies in Malaysia, having produced films that has been selected in big festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Busan, and many more.
Among their films produced are Woman on Fire Looks for Water, and The Tiger Factory, which premiered at the Venice and Cannes film festivals. In 2012, its co- production with CPH-Dox, Girl in the Water, won Denmark’s Academy Award for best short film.
Double, a horror short, was executive produced by Justin Lin (Fast Five), premiered on YouTube in 2012. In 2014, Greenlight Pictures produced two feature films, The Second Life of Thieves and River of Exploding Durians, which was accepted for Competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival – the first ever Malaysian film to do so.
In 2015, Greenlight Pictures produced Return to Nostalgia, a documentary about finding Malaysia’s first post world war film. The movie premiered at the Busan International Film festival.
In 2016, Greenlight Pictures co-produced Pigeon, directed by Isao Yukisada, a Japanese-Malaysian co-production that is part of the Asian Three Fold Mirror omnibus that will premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2016.
Aqerat, produced in 2017, won Best director and Best Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Greenlight Pictures also produced Barbarian Invasion (2021), winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Greenlight Pictures, co-founded by Woo Ming Jin and Edmund Yeo, have also been involved in co-productions with Japan, US, South Korea, and South East Asian countries. .
Stone Turtle (2022), won the Fipresci Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, among others. Stone Turtle has been regarded as one of the best films coming out of Asia in 2022, and hailed as a ‘Stunning mystery that puts as Supernatural twists on real world trauma,’ by Variety. It has been bought by Amazon Films and will be released in 2023.
Currently, Greenlight Pictures is developing a slate of films with international co- producers from South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and the US.
Woo Ming Jin has the distinction of being the only Malaysian director to have his films screened in Cannes, Berlin and Venice film festivals. His first film Monday Morning Glory (2005) screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, while his second, Elephant and the Sea (2007), won awards in Torino, Cinema Digital Seoul, Portugal and Spain film festivals.
Woman on Fire Looks for Water (2009) premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, and has played in Pusan, Rotterdam, Los Angeles and the Pompidou Center in Paris, among many others.
The Tiger Factory (2010), premiered at the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Special Jury Mention at the Tokyo Film Festival in 2010.
The Second Life of Thieves (2014), premiered at the Busan and Rotterdam International Film Festivals and has been supported by the Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam, and the Vision Sud Est fund.
Ming Jin is also a producer of many award winning films, notably Aqerat (We, The Dead) in 2017 that was the winner of Best Director and Newcomer Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Barbarian Invasion (2021), winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Shanghai Film Festival.
His latest film, Stone Turtle (2022), played in Main Competition at the Locarno International FIlm Festival and won the Fipresci Prize (International Critics Prize). The film has won numerous awards at festivals in Montreal, Bali, and Portugal.
